Shorts – Work

‘Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else.’ (Sir James Barrie)

To find the work you enjoy, you need to explore. You will find that you may be passionate about many things but that passion is not going to magically appear. Do not base your passion on what others are doing for you may not enjoy that as well.

Many of us start our careers based on a line of study we would have undertaken. We may have felt that this would have been something we truly wanted but along the way we could have had a change of mind and/or heart. That is fine but what is not fine is if you are cheating yourself to go and do something you do not enjoy.

Enjoyment does not mean you need to to be high and happy all the time, even those who are doing the work they like get burnouts. What is important is knowing that the work you do has the constant underlying effect of wanting to do more, to expand yourself in what you are doing.

Be it working for someone or doing your own thing, if you currently feel that it is such a chore to get to work or even doing the work, then you need to pause and ask what is the underlying issue. Remember to differentiate the work from the people you work with (environment). If you feel it is the environment then maybe it is time to move on. If it is the work then you need to pause and be disciplined in exploring what you may enjoy. This does not have to be fixed as you are only exploring.

By exploring you will sooner or later find something you will enjoy and that will spur you on to better yourself.

It is never too late to start, especially for those who are comfortable with the financial gains but find the work they are doing emotionally and mentally draining. Try to find the time to explore your passion in a systematic, practical and discipline manner and it may surprise you – if you can develop a sense of determination for the work you do, you will find that it will make a difference to your mental, emotional and physical well being.

Take care everyone. Remember to be kind to yourself and to others.
