When Facebook (FB) came about it was a platform that connected people from all over the place – it gave us a window to the lives of your friends and even those we didn’t know – stalking just took a whole new direction. From there more social media platforms have been created. It seems that in this day and age not having a social media platform is a disadvantage. It is like we have been ‘forced’ to have one especially for those who have their own business.
I used to have a FB account before of which I closed but created a new one sometime last year due to my work. I also have an Instagram (IG) account again due to my work and also because I wanted to store the doodles I do as a hobby.
In the past (when I had my first FB account), I used to observe that some people had like hundreds and even thousands of friends on FB and I thought how is that possible? Nowadays we call them followers.
I guess that social media friends or followers are not actually true friendships but the more you have the more popular you become. I guess maybe my mind is not wired fully for these kind of interactions but it did get me thinking – as much as social media platforms have positive traits, can it actually allow us to build healthy friendships – maybe that is why some platforms now say followers.
Do we need more friends/followers because we crave being popular or do we truly want to keep in touch with our friends? I am always intrigue by the current way we communicate, you could say it is a love-hate relationship especially with that of social media – maybe it is just a generation thing. I am just glad that I had a chance to experience the old ways of making friends and have an update in that aspect cause I have come to an age where I am really not bothered about what other people are up to. It is an experience I guess all of us go through, as we are younger we know a tonne of people and as we grow older we keep those who are close to us closer. If at the end you can say you have 5 friends who have been with you, consider yourself fortunate.
Take care everyone and be kind to yourself and to others.
