My Thoughts – Spiritual? (Part 2 of 2)

This word ‘spiritual’ is a word that can create a lack of clarity or at times lead us down a path of depression. At times when I ask my clients, ‘What their line of religion is?’, more often than not they say – ‘I am spiritual’ but what they actually mean is that they are comfortable with all religions or that they are not actually following the religion they were born with.

The challenge I have with this word – spiritual or spirituality is that is really does not seem to give us a clear understanding of what it is. Some connect the chakras to spirituality, some meditation, some to fairies or some Greek or Egyptian goddess, others to a Hindu deity or the realm of angels.

I don’t think being spiritual matters as much as being human. The journey of self is not solely about your spiritual journey, it is about your physical, emotional and mental body and journey. It is getting to know yourself, your personality, your wants and desires. It is about being aware, finding your sense of happiness. When we get caught on this journey called spirituality we may tend to be disappointed – we suddenly feel there is some big reason our soul is here but for all you know your soul may just have wanted to experience success or love or something that may be so insignificant to the world but most significant for you. It is just about living your life the best you can.

Spirituality or being spiritual is not some lala magical journey, dealing and living your life is what matters most. Doing our best to enjoy this journey. There is of course a sense of unfairness, some have amazing lives while others need to survive wondering where their next meal is going to come from. Then there are extremes – victims of war, victims of trafficking and sometimes the dark seems to over shadow the light.

There are things we can change and so many others we can’t and that is ok, we do our best – to be kind, to be accepting and we leave the things outside of control to be sorted out by what is known as the universal energies. There is a form of energy bigger than our minds can comprehend, some call it God, others call it Divine energy, some call it the law of Karma or cause and effect. Either way things will balance out, our role is maybe to just balance our lives.

It is important for us to be aware that when we use the word spiritual, we really need to ask ourselves what do we really mean as we would not want to embark on a journey that ends up not actually giving us what we seek.

Take care everyone. Be kind to yourself and to others.
